If you’re redoing your roof, or if you’re constructing a new home, you know that your roofing material counts. It’s a serious decision, and there are so many options out there (including asphalt shingles, wooden shakes, slate tiles, composite tiles, and metal). So how do you choose which material is best for your abode? Well, today, we’re here to assess a few considerations that you can mull over as you’re deciding on a material for your home:
Functionality & Age
First things first, you’ll have to consider the functionality of your roofing material. If you have a low-sloping roof, for instance, metal may be your best option (since it’s very impenetrable to leaks, and it is excellent for shedding snow that has accumulated). If you’re considering wooden shakes or slate tiles for your roof, you’ll have to make sure that the structure of your home is strong enough to hold the extra weight (wooden shakes can add hundreds of pounds to your roof, and slate tiles can even add tons of weight).
Also, consider the age of your home. If you have an old home that may not last for the next few decades, it may make more sense to stick to materials that are more economical and less durable, such as asphalt shingles or wood shakes. On the other hand, if you’re building a brand new structure, installing slate or metal might be ideal, since they’ll protect your home the longest.
Now, asphalt shingles are the most popular choice among Americans, and they come in a variety of colors and patterns; however, you don’t have to follow suit. Consider a classic look with slate tiles or wood shakes. Wood shakes are especially popular for homes that have stone facades, since they further magnify the natural look of the home. Slate tiles look great atop brick homes (although they look great on almost any home). Meanwhile, metal roofing provides a clean, consistent roof look, which works well to heighten complex home facades, or it can be utilized to keep a simple home just that: simple. If you do opt for asphalt shingles, you’ll have a slew of patterns and colors to choose from. Be sure to take a look at samples to compare their color with the exterior color of your home.
The prices between roofing materials can be quite different. Slate tiles, which are the most expensive option (and most durable) can cost twenty times more than asphalt shingles (which aren’t very long-lasting). You’ll certainly have to consider your budget when deciding on a roofing material. Take note, that cost generally matches durability; so what you put in up front might pay off over time.
