Is it time to install a new roof over your abode? You may have a headache at all the available options, as far as roofing materials go. On top of considering cost and the longevity of your roofing material, you’ll have to consider the aesthetic quality of your roof. When you’re picking the perfect roofing material, you may find that you’re plagued with questions: Which material will look best with your home? What color will look best with my home’s siding? How well will my roofing material age?

Today, we’re addressing those questions. Here at Red Dog's Roofing of Massachusetts, we know what counts when it comes to selecting the right roofing material for your home. Here's our two cents.

Consider Materials

What are the materials that clad your home? If you have facades built out of stone, then it may be best to stick to the “natural” look of your home—you might consider wood shakes, or possibly slate tile roofing. On the other hand, if you have a home that’s more modern, you may choose to opt for metal roofing to continue the theme. Consider asphalt shingles, wood shakes, metal roofing, slate tiles, and composite slate tiles.

Consider Color

If you’re opting for a roofing material with a variety of color options, you’ll want to pair the color of your roof with the rest of your home. Now, there are no steadfast rules when it comes to the color of your roof.

If you have a home with colored siding, it’s likely best to pair it with a black or grey roof, or a muted brown roof. On the flip side, if you have a home with a neutral tone, you may get creative with color and opt for anything from red to green.

Consider Age

Roofing materials age. Depending on the material that you choose, your roof’s aesthetics may naturally change over the years. That’s especially true for wood shakes. Cedar shakes may start as a vibrant rust color, but they’ll transform to a grey color as they age.

Other Considerations

You may also base your decision on various other considerations. For instance, you might plan ahead by considering the longevity of the roofing material at hand. If you’re not planning in your home forever, you could save some cash by opting for affordable asphalt shingles. On the other hand, if you're building a home to last a lifetime, slate tiles may be more fitting (they can last for over a century!).
